“Sussan Deyhim is a fascinating original voice in music and the arts. Her rich and complex vocals are warm, beautifully sung, and always surprising.” - Bobby McFerrin.
Sussan Deyhim and her star-studded list of guest artists will grace Grand Performances’ Waterstage with "Romance Language" a program rooted in the sublime music and poetry of Iran.
Deyhim's three-decade journey across the musical globe will enchant the audience with a thrilling and mesmerizing sonic and emotional journey. Deyhim’s Grand Performances debut – following sold-out performances at the Broad Stage and UCLA’s Royce Hall - will deftly incorporate reinterpretations of great pieces from the classical Persian repertoire, vintage Iranian Torch Songs from the 40s-60s, jazz standards by Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto.
The evening also features pieces from Deyhim's recent release City of Leaves on her label Venus Rising Records. This enchanting repertoire has left international audiences in a dream state long after they have left the theater. Deyhim will be joined on stage by two special guests: Mohsen Namjoo, the renowned Iranian musician and songwriter; and Sohrab Pounazeri, the Iranian musical prodigy of his generation, whose family ensemble, The Shams Ensemble, is one of the best known Kurdish classical and folk performing groups in Iran.
