Each year, as I write my letter to our audience, I have a chance to focus on the unique program that Grand Performances offers. Many of you have been coming to California Plaza for performances for years. Many of you are relatively new friends. In either case, you are the “urban adventurers” who have become our ‘ambassadors’ who reach out to others encouraging them to join you for our dance, music and theatre presentations.
Over those years you have introduced Grand Performances to your friends and family and helped us attract America’s most diverse audience. Each year, I hear from a number of people who say they have lived in Los Angeles for years and just discovered this wonderful cultural oasis.
As with all non-profits, the economy is taking a major toll on our fund-raising. At the same time we hear more and more often how important our programming will be this summer. When economic times are uncertain and when the international political scene is in turmoil, the opportunities to gather and benefit from cultural programming become even more critical to individuals and to communities.
We know that it is now more important than ever for Americans to experience the arts of as many cultures as possible. The goodwill between countries and communities, the increased understanding we Americans gain and the resultant cultural confirmation are all important.
We encourage all of you to keep being our ambassadors to your friends and family. Come down often this summer. Please donate as much as you can to support the program. Together, we are contributing to the health of our communities.
