Founded in 1992 and endowed with an enormous talent for musical arrangements and tradition research, Son de Madera represents the leading success in the current son jarocho movement (a musical and dance genre from Veracruz, Mexico).
Son de Madera´s main objective is the diffusion of the son jarocho based on the research of the traditional music and the incorporation of new sounds that enrich this music with new proposals.
In achieving this objective, Son de Madera appeared during the summer of 2003 at the main folk and traditional music festivals of Canada (ICAFOLK Fest, the Rogue Folk Music Club, London Sunfest, Toronto Harbourfront, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mission Folk Music Festival and Calgary Folk Music Festival)
Subsequently, Son de Madera appeared in the United States at the Chicago Old Town School Of Music, Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center, LA Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley and at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, California.
In Fall of 2003, Son de Madera began a tour that lead them to participate in the Wereldfeest of Utrecht, Holland, in the Farinera del Clot of Barcelona, in the Mercado de Musica Viva de Vic in Spain, The Schouwburg Odeon in Zwolle and The Kit Tropenthrater in Amsterdam, Holland. The tour ended in the Festival de las Andalucías Atlanticas in Essaouira, Morocco.
During the Canadian and European tour, Son de Madera shared stages with international music figures such as: Petrona Martinez, Marina Heredia and Ketama among others.
In addition to the group work in the touring and recording scenes, Son de Madera has participated in joint projects with other musicians such as their collaboration with the Irish music group The Cassidies and the Chicano group Quetzal.
Son de Madera’s performances are sensuous and with an exquisite sense of musicianship and have been featured on numerous television and radio programs in Mexico and the USA. Their recordings have been used in films, soundtracks, televisions documentaries and theatre.
The repertoire of Son de Madera comes mainly from the sones of the traditional fandango (musical fiesta around the dance’s platform) in the South of Veracruz.
