Men with swords singing through the air, knives flashing and red flags waving. Women with their long and elegant sleeves flying, fans and silk handkerchiefs. Hair, long and black as night; fingernails long and lacquered. These images have contributed to Western perceptions of Asia’s mysterious and awe-inspiring civilizations. When combined with elements of Zen, Peking opera or Taosim in the Western mind and media, they become short-hand notation for "Orientalism". The creative team from Hong Kong's extraordinary CCDC examines and responds to the intriguing and, to them, sometimes annoying concept of Orientalism with their iconic work, "365 Ways of Doing and Undoing Orientalism". *Artist confirmed, date tentative. |
