John Coltrane: A Love Supreme at 60 w/ Isaiah Collier

  • Grand Performances 350 South Grand Avenue Los Angeles, CA, 90071 United States (map)

Experience the transcendent power and healing of music as Grand Performances celebrates the 60th anniversary of John Coltrane’s iconic “A Love Supreme.” Worlds Alive and The John & Alice Coltrane Home invite you to A Celebration of Divine Inspiration, Joy and Transformation in honor of John Coltrane’s musical gift to the world of A Love Supreme - his deeply powerful and adventurous declaration of spiritual gratitude, devotion and expression, which continues to resonate across generations and genres to this day.

Widely regarded as a spiritual and musical masterpiece, Coltrane’s landmark suite comes to life here through the prodigious talents of Isaiah Collier, whose fiery, original, and soulful interpretations have drawn comparisons to Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter. Collier on tenor sax, vocals is joined in Coltrane’s ‘Classic Quartet’ format by Brandon Coleman on piano, William Parker on upright bass, and Tim Regis on drums, channeling the original version of this timeless milestone. Combined with the spirit lifting, soulful joy of Jimetta Rose & The Voices of Creation; Dwight Trible; opening invocation by Surya Botofasina; introduction by Michelle Coltrane; sublime Sound healing with Jimmy Chan, and mood selector Jeremy Sole, THIS is a Celebration not to miss one minute of.

A Love Supreme is one of the most honest musical performances created in this transformative way - its beauty and appeal are timeless. Few recordings have garnered as much universal praise and reverence, beloved by artists as musically diverse as Flea, Patti Smith, Kamasi Washington, Four Tet, to Henry Rollins, Carlos Santana, Robert Glasper, St. Vincent, U2, Common, Q-Tip, Iggy Pop, Rakim, to Steve Reich, and Jimi Hendrix.

One positive thought produces millions of positive vibrations.
— John Coltrane

Alice Coltrane described John coming downstairs after days of intense work on the composition as being “like Moses coming down from the mountain, it was so beautiful. He walked down, and there was that joy, that peace in his face.”

‘A Love Supreme’, was recorded on one momentous day, December 9, 1964, at the legendary Van Gelder Studios, and released in January 1965 on Impulse Records. It features the ‘Classic Quartet’ of McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, produced by Bob Thiele and magnificently engineered by Rudy van Gelder. For Coltrane, it represented something personal and profound: a chance to present a musical statement that carried a deeply held spiritual vision of universality, in which “all paths lead to God,” and to share this philosophy with a growing audience. “I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music… I feel this has been granted through His grace.”

In any situation that we find in our lives, when there is something that we feel should be better, we must exert effort to try and make it better. So it’s the same socially, musically, politically in any department of our lives.
— John Coltrane

Isaiah Collier, the Chicago-based innovator, multi-instrumentalist and virtuoso is opening up new dimensions, and is being heralded globally whilst doing so. Collier on tenor sax and vocals, is joined by the mighty quartet of Brandon Coleman on piano, William Parker on upright bass, and Tim Regis on Drums, gong, tympani. 2020’s ‘Cosmic Transitions’ his five part suite, intentionally takes place at the legendary Van Gelder Studios on John Coltrane’s birthday, September 23rd, in the very room where ‘A Love Supreme’ was created on one momentous December day in 1964, with immense impact to this day, sixty years later.

Collier has established himself as an heir apparent to both the Chicago lineage and the post-Coltrane sax tradition.
