Todos Somos Sagrados (All Are Sacred) An Evening of Flor y Canto with Rey M. Rodriguez and Friends
Grand Performances and Proyecto Pastoral present Todos Somos Sagrados (All Are Sacred): An Evening of Flor y Canto with Rey M. Rodríguez, fellow poets Lorna Dee Cervantes, Aideed Medina, Ceasar K. Avelar, and Janet Gonzalez, with special musical guests Las Chorizeras.
Todos Somos Sagrados (All Are Sacred) by Rey M. Rodríguez, a powerful collection of poetry, reflects the history and spirit of Boyle Heights, telling stories of immigrant families, community organizers, mothers, workers, and young people whose resilience helped transform their neighborhood. The poems honor the everyday acts of courage and compassion that gave rise to Proyecto Pastoral at Dolores Mission and continue to sustain its mission today.
Over the past four decades, Proyecto Pastoral has helped launch transformative programs and initiatives that have shaped Boyle Height’s and Los Angeles's social justice landscape including early childhood education centers, youth leadership programs, community organizing efforts, and the Guadalupe Homeless Project. Proyecto Pastoral has also been at the forefront of providing community critical aid and resources as a result of the Lineage Warehouse Fire that continues to impact Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles on an economical, social and environmental level.
Rey M. Rodríguez
Poet and attorney Rey M. Rodríguez releases his debut Todos Somos Sagrados/All Are Sacred, a tribute to the women of Proyecto Pastoral in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles.
"A treatise in poetry about one of the most important stories of our time-the formation and work of Proyecto Pastoral in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Violence, drugs, and death plagued these streets, which in the 1990s and into the 2000s were the most gang-infested in the country. But mothers stood up for healing, peace, for saving the children. Projects arose to help youth but also the unhoused and migrants. People in need—God's work. Powerful figures like Father Greg Boyle met the call. Here, Rey M. Rodríguez uses poems to carry their voices, stories, pains, and joys. In Spanish and English, in any language, it's a work of art, a work of action."
-Luis J. Rodríguez, former Los Angeles Poet Laureate, author of Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. and It Calls You Back: An Odyssey through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing

He began his career in Lima, performing widely in festivals, theater recitals, and community events during a period of revival in traditional Peruvian music alongside Rock & Roll influences. With the ensemble, he co-produced seven albums and performed at landmark venues including the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall, including collaborations with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. As a solo artist, Hurtado has released acclaimed albums including Guitarrista, Los Angeles Blues, Selva, Altiplano, and Paisajes, along with the single Cantando en el Camino. 7:00 pm - 7:50 pm Blonco Obini
7:50 pm - 8:45 pm DJ
8:45 pm - 10:00 pm Son Rompe Pera
Son Rompe Pera
Born and raised in Naucalpan, the deep outskirts of Mexico City, the Gama brothers and their band Son Rompe Pera are at the forefront of the resurrection of the marimba, the historic Mexican and Central American instrument that was omnipresent in the region 100 years ago but has basically vanished from today’s music. It can possibly be seen in a few tourist zones, with the last few abuelos keeping alive its unique sound, but there hasn’t been a popular contemporary band based around the marimba in a generation.
The marimba has deep roots in their family, since their father first brought one home and then baptized the band with an inside family joke name in 2003. While respecting it’s legacy, at the same time they have been pushing the limits of this historic instrument, making it their own and playing it in such a unique way that audiences are literally left breathless when they see the band perform. They are one of the main bands responsible for developing the genre ‘Cumbia Punk’, a wild danceable mash-up that can now be found throughout the Americas and even in Europe. The band blends the folkloric tradition of the instrument with the other legacy that runs deep through their history- punk. It’s a combination that, especially when played live, unites audiences in sweaty, respectful mayhem, and one that’s become an essential on stages across the globe.
Bloco Obini
Bloco Obini is an ensemble of queens dedicated to the power of Afro-Brazilian drum and dance. The collective celebrates ancestral heritage through vibrant percussion and movement, centering the beauty and strength of women within the African diaspora. J. PERIOD and Josh Kun Present: The Art of the Crossfade (Musical Lecture)
Music historian and professor Josh Kun teams up with DJ/producer J.PERIOD (The Live Mixtape) for this two-night program that explores music at the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Night 1 will feature a musical lecture on the DJ crossfader, the horizontal slider on a mixer used to blend two distinct sound sources. Kun and J.PERIOD will explore how the idea of the "crossfade" can build bridges between cultures.
Day 2 will begin with an afternoon community workshop and will culminate later that evening in The Live Mixtape: Crossfade Edition, a high-energy Hip Hop “mixtape” performed and recorded LIVE onstage in one take, featuring an all-star lineup of artists, musicians, DJs, and community voices.
The Art of the Crossfade is a live multimedia experience presented by Professor Josh Kun and DJ/Producer J.PERIOD that explores how music can connect people across cultures, generations, and communities. At the center of the experience is the crossfader — the horizontal slider on a DJ mixer that allows two songs to blend without erasing either. In the hands of a DJ, different sounds, histories, and perspectives can coexist to create something entirely new.
Using live DJ performance, storytelling, visuals, and conversation, The Art of the Crossfade explores how music can become a bridge between people and ideas — showing how connection does not require sameness, and how our differences can become the foundation for creativity, understanding, and community.
Part live mix, part cultural conversation, and part behind-the-scenes journey into the art of DJing, the program invites audiences to experience music as more than entertainment: as a powerful tool for connection.
