Once upon a time, the trumpet was popular. As an instrument that called to crowds, the trumpet articulated the collective effervescence of different eras: from the stone churches of Vivaldi’s Venice to Sousa’s tours of America, from the royal processions of Prussia to second-lines on the streets of New Orleans. The trumpet is a slippery symbol that has had its say in a host of cultural forms throughout history. CJ Camerieri, having seized the trumpet’s formidable past, now reconfigures how we hear the instrument in contemporary times, revealing its relevance to our modern ears.
